Parents ACT is a support group for parents who have children with Autism and other disabilities. We laugh, cry, rejoice, and sometimes complain together. (LoL) There is nothing like being in a room full of moms and dads who know EXACTLY what you are talking about.
Mary Fults shares her story of her first Parents ACT meeting:
"Being in the room for the first time with all of those parents was overwhelming. I can still see every one's face, and remember exactly where we all sat.
I had been through so much already, and felt like no one understood me...until the meeting. At that time neither one of my ASD boys were diagnosed yet, but I 'knew' at least one was on the spectrum.
As I sat there, listening to everyone introduce themselves, I cried tears of joy. I was finally in a place where people 'got' what I was going through! I understood them, and they understood me.
I'll never forget that first meeting!"
Parents ACT in not only about support, but we are also about educating each other and the public. Awareness is key to the acceptance of our children! We try to have at least one workshop a year where parents, teachers, and the public are invited to come and learn about the different aspects of Autism.
